Making homemade Eggnog

One of the drinks that undoubtedly belongs to the Christmas festive season is egg cognac or egg liqueur. Although we can buy it very easily, those who have tasted the one made at home often don’t want to hear about another.

There are many recipes for egg cognac, but the basic ingredients are the same in most recipes – egg yolks, sugar, vanilla, whipped cream, and alcohol. In the past, inventive Czechs simplified the preparation by using condensed milk.

When it comes to the type of alcohol, there are already differences between the individual egg cognac recipes. The most commonly used include rum, brandy, bourbon, and whiskey. In some recipes, you can also find various spices, especially cinnamon or nutmeg, and cardamom, which give it another flavor dimension.

Storing eggnog

When it comes to storing eggnog, there are a few essential things to consider.

Firstly, the shelf life of eggnog is dependent on two factors – the amount of alcohol used and the storage conditions.

When making eggnog, a sufficient amount of alcohol should be used as it acts as a preservative. This is because alcohol inhibits the growth of bacteria and other microorganisms that can spoil the drink. For the best shelf life, it is recommended to use at least 15% alcohol by volume.

Secondly, when it comes to storage, it is crucial to keep eggnog in a calm and dark place, such as in a refrigerator.

This is because exposure to light and heat can cause the drink to spoil faster. If the eggnog is non-alcoholic, it must be consumed much faster as it will not have the same preservative properties as alcoholic eggnog.

While eggnog can be consumed immediately after preparation, some people prefer to age the drink to allow the flavors to develop. To do this, the eggnog should be stored in a sealed container in the refrigerator for at least a week.

The longer it is aged, the smoother and creamier the eggnog. It is worth noting that aged eggnog will have a higher alcohol content than freshly made eggnog, as some of the alcohol will evaporate during the aging process.

Serving eggnog

When it comes to serving eggnog, there are many options available.

Traditionally, eggnog is served chilled, but it can also be added to hot drinks such as coffee or tea.

Cold eggnog can also be served with whipped cream and snow from egg whites, which gives it a more delicious taste and a frothy texture.

Lastly, eggnog is often served with a pinch of spices, especially cinnamon and nutmeg, which complement the rich and creamy flavor of the drink.
