Traditional Christmas gingerbread

Do you follow traditions? Then traditional fragrant gingerbread in the shape of trees and angels should not be missing from your table!

Ingredients

  • 150 g of unsalted butter, cut into cubes
  • ½ cup (125 ml) golden syrup
  • ½ cup (110 g) brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of soda
  • 3 cups (450 g) plain flour
  • 1 tablespoon of ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon of nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoon of ground cloves
  • ½ teaspoon of baking powder
  • 1 egg (lightly beaten)
  • confectionery decoration

Method

  • Preheat the oven to 180°C and prepare two trays lined with baking paper.
  • Place the butter, golden syrup and sugar in a saucepan and heat over medium heat.
  • Bring to a boil and, stirring constantly, cook for 3 minutes until the sugar dissolves.
  • Remove the mixture from the heat and add the baking soda. Mix and set aside.
  • Add the flour, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and baking powder to the butter mixture.
  • Add the eggs and mix until combined.
  • Transfer the mixture to a lightly floured surface and form a smooth dough.
  • Divide the dough into two parts, shape them into two disks and wrap each half separately in food foil. Then chill for 45 minutes in the fridge until the dough is firm.
  • Then roll both halves of the dough into about 0.5 cm sheets and cut out the desired shapes.
  • Place the candy on the baking sheets 3 cm apart and bake for 8 minutes.
  • Then let it cool down and decorate with pastry sprinkles or icing according to your imagination.
